Presidential Candidates: Get Back to D.C. and Protect Our Civil Liberties Citizen outcry over amnesty to AT&T and Verizon shuts down Obama campaign e-mail servers CREDO Mobile sends 60,000 e-mails to Senators Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CREDO Mobile, the San Francisco-based mobile phone service from Working Assets that fights for progressive causes, has sent 60,000 e-mails from its members in 24 hours to the presidential campaigns of Senators Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and Barack Obama. The e-mails request that the senators take a break from campaigning, return to Washington and stop legislation that would grant retroactive immunity to AT&T, Verizon and other big telecom companies.

The response was so great that early Wednesday morning, the Obama campaign informed CREDO Mobile that e-mails from citizens demanding the senator return to the Senate to support a filibuster against telecom amnesty had shut down the campaign's e-mail servers.

"CREDO members made their opposition to amnesty for AT&T and Verizon loud and clear to Senators Clinton, McCain, and Obama," said Michael Kieschnick, president of CREDO Mobile. He added, "It's time for the senators who wish to be President in 2009 show that they will fight for the Constitution and the rule of law now, in 2008."

The Senate's pursuit of legislation that grants retroactive immunity for the telecom companies is seen by CREDO Action members who took part in this online action as a move to thwart the civil liberties lawsuits and cover up the Bush administration's own lawbreaking. "Mr. Bush and his allies have made it crystal clear that they will allow legislation designed to let surveillance of terrorists to die unless that bill protects the shareholders of AT&T and Verizon," explained Mr. Kieschnick. "The least these senators can do is come off the campaign trail to do their job and protect the Constitution."

A FISA bill is currently under consideration in the Senate, and a vote is expected in the coming days. Senators Clinton, McCain, and Obama have a unique opportunity as presidential candidates to stop immunity for the telecom industry from moving forward by focusing the national debate on their opposition.
